Just days before Women’s month, 24-year-old artist Romeo Niyigena launched his intriguing collection, ‘The Obsession’ at Indiba Art Space, celebrating the beauty of African women. We spoke to Romeo about his inspiration for this collection, following his passion and the future of art in Rwanda. Q: What inspired this collection? A: I like to paint […] Since its Inception in 2011, our Peacebuilding Institute (PBI) has empowered over 300 young people worldwide, equipping them with the tools to become agents of peace in their respective countries. These dedicated alumni are committed to creating positive change and making a difference. Their stories embody hope and serve as inspiring examples of how PBI […] Kinyakura Odette is a member of Never Again Rwanda’s Space for Peace located in Cyuve Sector, Musanze District. She shared her personal journey of how the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi deeply impacted her, leading to long- standing resentment. As a child, she lost most of her mother’s family during the genocide, and her grandmother […] Hate speech is a serious problem that has long affected society. Young people are particularly vulnerable to becoming victims because they are more likely to be exposed to social media. They can also play a role in ending hate speech. In Vox Pop, we see how young people are affected by hate speech and how […] Mizero lived and enjoyed a normal childhood life before the Genocide against the Tutsi with his parents in leadership positions, enabling them to have a comfortable life. He was 9 years old when the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi began. The 1994 Genocide affected people differently. For Mizero he felt immense shame when both his […] My name is Ngabo Karegeya, usually called Ibererya Bigogwe. I promote tourism and culture here at Nyabihu in a beautiful place called “Ibererya Bigogwe”. I graduated from the College of Business and Economics/SFB in Kigali and could not imagine that I would return to the countryside after graduation as most young people stay in Kigali […] When providing Safe Spaces for Youth, we must remember to cater for those who come from rural areas. These youth do not have similar access to those from urban areas, and can, therefore, be more vulnerable. Safe spaces for youth should be categorized accordingly to different groupings to enable young people to feel free to contribute without fear of being judged, this can work through grouping them into small numbers per age or backgrounds. We ought to be wise and conscious as we connect to the world because being young adults might expose us to not only positive things but a lot of negatives as well. Let’s join our hands together to restore peace in our community and leave a legacy to the future generations. We should learn to co-exist and to accept each other regardless of their background and differences. I encourage the youth to use their talents in a positive way in order to make positive changes in their communities. As it is said, youth are the future, it means as the youth we have to do something today. In a world that is constantly trying to change us, the first person one should aspire to be is themselves. Be yourself because everything you need is within you. That is where the magic lies. Young people are seen to be dismissive, but they are also the best asset to bring about sustained Peace. Engrossing youth in peacebuilding is a great opportunity for building and strengthening the next generation. The debate club at my school is my example of a safe space for the youth that I make use of. We are able to express ourselves to our peers and also understand the issues that we the youth face in our communities. A lack of destination makes every way the right one. Faith is therefore important because it gives one a sense of purpose while guiding them in the right way to go. Challenges are golden opportunities that make you realize how to create the pace you take your life and dreams on. There is no single career that guarantees wealth but when you do what you love with passion, you really make it. Success is a byproduct of discipline, consistency and being visionary.Welcome to Youth Voices Rwanda, a platform by and for the Youth, aiming to champion and amplify the voices of the young people.
